The EMD SD40-2 was built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Divison between 1972 and 1986 and proved to be one of the best selling diesel locomotives built to date. EMD delivered 3,957 units driven by a 3,000 horsepower diesel-electric powerplant to most of the large and intermediate railroads in North America. Even after 35 plus years of operation, the SD40-2 with its distinctive front and rear "porches" can be found working mainlines from the icy nothern regions of Canada to the warm and varied southern topography of Mexico.
