Santa Fe
Road Number ATSF 10001
This 40’ standard box car with single sliding door is painted red with black roof and ends, ladders and details. It bears the early black and white Circle-Cross herald with lettering in both white and black. It was built in October 1954, services in June 1958 and runs on Roller Bearing trucks. This car was a one-of-a-kind test bed for a new “home-built” class of cars. The success of this experiment led to the construction of 100 new Bx-76 class cars in 1958-1959. Along with the new cushioning came a brilliant Indian Red paint scheme with an oversized 61” version of the older style “Circle Cross” herald with the black box background, used only on this Bx-77 car. The remainder of cushion underframe equipped cars received the newer “Circle Cross” herald after 1959.
