Built in 1953 these units stayed with the SP line for their entire working life. In 1959, SP standardized with a paint scheme of dark grey, white lettering and a red ‘winged’ nose. this scheme was dubbed ‘Bloody Nose’ by railfans. It was replaced in the mid 1980s by the ‘Kodachrome’ paint scheme.
