These powered F7A and B unit locomotives are painted dark gray with the SP red ‘Bloody Nose’ paint scheme and lettered in white. Built in 1953 these units stayed with the SP line for their entire working life. In 1959, SP standardized with a paint scheme of dark grey, white lettering and a red ‘winged’ nose. this scheme was dubbed ‘Bloody Nose’ by railfans. It was replaced in the mid 1980s by the ‘Kodachrome’ paint scheme.
